SA OSS takes another step forward
Update – The South African government last week took another step forward in the drive to formalise the use of open source software. Late last week the open source policy framework, compiled by the Government IT Officers Council (Gitoc) workgroup, was submitted for approval by the director generals(DGs) before being submitted the Minister of Public Service and Administration.
Arno Webb, chair of the Gitoc working group which has been steering the document through government, says the policy framework was “given a very favourable response” by the DGs and only “one or two small changes need to be made”.
The DGs are a broad grouping of senior government officials that make up the Governance and Administration cluster appointed by Cabinet.
Webb says this most recent approval is a big step forward for the framework. The next step, he says, is to prepare the document for delivery to the Minister of Public Service and Administration for approval. Webb says this next step will depend on the schedule of Cabinet but will be done as soon as possible.
