LTSP releases version 4 of thin-client technology

By   |  August 11, 2003

Fans of diskless workstations will no doubt be pleased with the release this week of version 4.0 of Linux Terminal Server Project. The newest release of the thin-client technology boasts faster configuration and a host of new utilities.

\”LTSP fulfills a critical need to have reliable, powerful, low-cost deployment options for Linux,\” says Jim McQuillan, LTSP project leader. \”Version 4.0 delivers even more power and functionality for Linux-based thin clients\”

McQuillan says LTSP 4.0 is built entirely from source, allowing more flexibility to run on different platforms and offers complete customisation by the user. As far as new features go, LTSP 4.0 includes an LTSP Build Environment, which allows administrators to build local applications and customise LTSP for their particular needs.

LTSP 4.0 also features new \”Screen Scripts\” that give administrators better control over what applications run on an individual terminal and a more advanced file parser. LTSP 4.0 will now run on any Linux distribution that has a gcc compiler.

\”LTSP 4.0 allows administrators to customise every virtual terminal on its system to run different applications,\” says Ron Colcernian, LTSP project lead and president of DisklessWorkstations.com. \”It was designed to give users, administrators and developers the highest flexibility and customisability possible.\”
