Microsoft this week added to it’s growing open source software collection by announcing open source PST data tools. The software, which was released under an Apache 2.0 license, will allow open source developers to work with Outlook’s PST file format.

The release announcement covers two projects: the PST Data Structure View Tool and the PST File Format software development kit (SDK), according to Peter Galli, Microsoft’s open source community manager.

According to Galli “the PST Data Structure View Tool allows developers to browse the internal data structures of a PST file and is designed to assist people who are learning the .pst format and help them to better understand the documentation”.

The PST File Format SDK is a cross platform C++ library for reading .pst files that can be incorporated into solutions that run on top of the .pst file format.
