Firefox mobile, Jabber's buyer and Gnome 2.24

By   |  September 22, 2008

Morning wrap: Lots of news over the weekend to catch up on including news that Mozilla plans to make a mobile version of its Firefox browser. Mozilla chairman, Mitchell Baker, outlines a number of Mozilla’s 2010 objectives on her blog. Among these are plans for the mobile edition of Firefox.

On the acquisition front, Cisco has bough Jabber maker of the Jabber instant messaging platform. As Matt Asay points out very little is made of the fact that Jabber is open source in the acquisition announcement. But, open source and Jabber fans, this is good news for Jabber which has produced good quality software but has always struggled to make a business of it.

Finally, Gnome developers are readying for their next big release. Version 2.24 of the Gnome desktop is due out on September 24, in time to be incorporated into Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex which will release a beta of the distribution in early October.
