Ubuntu announces free culture winners

By   |  October 7, 2008

Perhaps taking a leaf out of OpenBSD’s book, the Ubuntu project has announced the winners of its free culture showcase which will be included on the Ubuntu 8.10 release CD later this month.

The culture showcase is meant to give those more creative members of the Ubuntu community the opportunity to celebrate the Ubuntu distribution as well as gain a wider audience. The audio and video packages will be include on the Intrepid Ibex release CD as “example content”.

The quirky OpenBSD project has for many years now released a new song along with each new release. These songs also celebrate the latest release but occassionally they have more direct messages for the free software world.

The winners of this round of the Ubuntu culture showcase are Andrés Vidau, an electronics engineer and Mexican musician and Andrew Higginson. Vidau’s submission was the track Patas de Trapo, a collaboration with guitarist Mauricio Barron.

The video winner of this showcase, Higginson is a 14-year old artist. His submission was Stop Motion Ubuntu, a stop-motion video made using entirely free software.

The Ubuntu team says that it plans to do this for every future release of Ubuntu.
