Can you make money with free software?

By   |  November 17, 2008

Who says you can’t make money with free software? As reader William points out, Dutch artist Stani did exactly that. He was a participant in a recent Dutch Ministry of Finance competition to design a 5 euro coin with the theme “Netherlands and Architecture”

And he won it, using entirely free software. Stani designed the tool using a collection of free software tools including Python, Gimp and Inkscape running on Ubuntu and Debian.

The winning coin not only won him a handsome prize but is now legal tender in the Netherlands.

The coin was released on October 30, the same day as Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex was released, Stani points out.
