News wrap: Fedora 11 named, KDE 3.5 for OpenSuse, Ubuntu alpha

By   |  January 13, 2009

Struggling to get up to speed after the holidays? Then here’s an easily digestible roundup of news you may have missed.

Fedora 11 gets a name
Ending its life this past week was Fedora 8 which reached end-of-life on January 7. Fedora 11, on the other hand, now has an official release name. Fedora leader Paul W. Frields announced over the weekend that the codename for the upcoming Fedora 11 release will be “Leonidas”. The name was elected over a number of other proposed names including Blarney, Brasília, Claypool, Duchess, Euryalus, Indomitable and Zampone. Fedora 11 is scheduled for release at the end of June 2009.

OpenSuse 11.1 and KDE 3.5
If you’re one of the OpenSuse 11.1 fans not entirely happy with KDE 4 then you might want to check this out. OpenSuse community member Carlos Goncalves has created and released a KDE 3.5 live image for openSUSE 11.1. Although it is not an official OpenSuse release the release is getting good traction in the OpenSuse community.

And then, something to look forward to this week is the third alpha release of Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope. This third alpha is planned for Thursday January 15. If you’re not all that brave then you may want to wait for the beta release on March 26. But that is still some way off so if you want to see what the Ubuntu developers have been up to over the holidays then get downloading later this week.
