Ubuntu Jaunty alpha 5 goes live

By   |  February 27, 2009

The fifth alpha release of Ubuntu 9.04, codenamed Jaunty Jackalope, has been released for testing. The release includes a number of new features including X.Org 1.6 and optimised font settings. What is not yet included in this release is the new notification system, although that is expected to be included in the final. There are, however, some new notification settings available in this release.

Ubuntu chief Mark Shuttleworth has said that users can expect to see a number of interface changes in the coming two releases of Ubuntu Linux – 9.04 and 9.10 – and some of these changes are starting to emerge in this alpha release.

Once of these is that font dot-per-inch settings are now optimised to the user’s monitor rather than the default 96dpi. Users can also customise these settings through the preferences menu. This is a caveat, however. In the know-bugs list the team warns that “font sizes may be abnormally small or large on monitors which misreport their capabilities”.

Although much has been made of the new system notification system planned for Ubuntu, it does not make an appearance in this release. Instead, some new settings options have been included which allow users to control where the notifications appear on their task bar. But Shuttleworth has said that the new notification system will make an appearance in Jaunty soon, so keep watching. Those who can’t wait can have a look at these instructions.

Alpha 5 includes the 2.6.28-8.26 kernel based on 2.6.28.7. The final kernel will not be the 2.6.29 version but a kernel 2.6.28 one.

Jaunty Alpha 5 gives users the option of installing the new ext4 file system although the ext3 filesystem will remain the default.

There are a number of known bugs in the Alpha 5 release including those for users of i845 and i865 chipsets.
