Oracle to host Linux and Java installfest at LinuxWorld

By   |  May 9, 2005

Oracle South Africa will host a Linux and Java \’installfest\’ at the upcoming LinuxWorld conference and exhibition, being held at the Sandton Convention Centre from 17th to 20th May.

The Oracle Linux Installfest will give developers the opportunity to install, at no cost, the Oracle
JDeveloper development toolset on Linux onto their own PCs.

The company plans to attract some of South Africa\’s top Java developers to the event by bringing to the country its most senior Linux expert specifically for the Installfest. Oracle\’s Wim Coekarts will
be conducting the hands-on experience and will also be available to answer questions. \”This is a once in a lifetime opportunity,\” says Oracle\’s database marketing manager Johan Bornman.

Bornman says the Oracle Installfest can accommodate about 60 developers who can either register at the Oracle\’s LinuxWorld stand or RSVP telephonically and reserve their seats. The Installfest will take place
on the evening of 19 May. \”We will kick things off at 5:30pm on the evening of the 19th and developers should bring their own notebooks or desktop PC CPUs (monitors, mice and keyboards will be supplied) and be
prepared to conduct \’major surgery\’ on their machines,\” he quips.

All attendees will receive licenses and installation media for the relevant tools.

Participants at the Installfest will also have an opportunity to enter the Oracle Space Sweepstakes competition, in which one developer from the Europe, Middle East and Africa region will win a US$90 000
sub-orbital space trip.

\”Entry into the sweepstakes requires developers to answer on-line questions related to Linux, JDeveloper and Oracle Database 10/g/ Standard Edition 1 and as such, the Installfest is aimed at equipping developers with the relevant tools and assisting them with the installation and configuration of their development environment,\” says Bornman.
