The KDE community this week released version 4.2.3 of the popular desktop environment as part of its regular monthly update release cycle. Major fixes included in this release include a fix for online IMAP filtering in KMail, improvements in KMail’s system tray icon which automatically updates mail status, and many bugfixes and improvements in the KHTML rendering engine. The release announcement and changelog are available on the KDE website.

OpenOffice.org 3.1 was released this week with a number of new features and improvements. Most noticeable will be the improved screen appearance which has boosted anti-aliasing support so that graphics appear sharper throughout the office suite. The new release also improves screen dragging. When dragging an object in a drawing across the screen, OpenOffice.org now shows a shadow of the object, rather than just a dotted outline, which ought to make it easier to place images accurately in complicated drawings. Other improvements include better file locking and the ability to user “over-lining” in addition to underlining.
