Schools Linux volunteers install ten laboratories in one day

By   |  June 17, 2005

The Shuttleworth-backed tuXlabs programme and the Schools Linux User Group volunteers yesterday installed 10 Linux-based laboratories in schools in the Western Cape, South Africa. What makes this particularly notable isthat the installations were done by volunteers and they completed the task before midday.

Yesterday was the June 16 Youth Day holiday in South Africa and the volunteers used the holiday to assist schools in the region.

Jonathan Carter of the Shuttleworth Foundation says that on the day more than 100 volunteers turned out to assist with the installations. This is the second time the tuXLab programme has performed the mass instaltions. Last year volunteers also installed 10 laboratories on the June 16 holiday.

The tuXlabs programme installs Linux thin client computer laboratories in schools using refurbished PCs.

Yesterday\’s mass install brings to 110 the number of laboratories installed since the programme\’s inception just two years ago. The programme is now being expanded to two other provinces in South Africa.

Corporate support for the installations yesterday included Metropolitan and Prudential.
