Chromium to be default browser for Ubuntu 10.10 UNR

Google’s Chromium browser will be the new default browser for the 10.10 release of Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR), replacing Firefox.

Chromium is the open source project behind Google’s official Chrome browser. Chromium is aimed at developers and is more “bleeding edge” than the Chrome releases. Chromium, for example, already includes support for the WebM codec while Chrome does not yet.

While Chromium will be the new default UNR, the desktop release of Ubuntu 10.10 will remain Mozilla’s Firefox.

The decision to include Chromium as the default browser does raise some issues, however. Chromium is a developer release and as such tends to be a moving target. As the blueprints show there are also other issues around incorporating Chromium, including managing security updates, integrating the browser into the desktop and menu system.
