OSS document manager boosts features

By   |  March 6, 2008

South Africa-developed open source document management application KnowledgeTree has boosted its feature set to include full Microsoft Office 2007 support in its latest release. Built on Apache and PHP, KnowledgeTree also includes a new web services-accessible document search based on the Apache Lucene project and online visual comparison of document versions.

The Cape Town-based company also announced today that the commercial version of KnowledgeTree would now be licensed on a per-user basis.

Offering the commercial version on a per-user basis would aid in “providing a low entry point for new customers and allowing customer organisations to grow their investment in the product only when they need to,” the company said.

KnowledgeTree is available as a commercial product with full support or as a community edition, licensed under the GNU General Public License version 3, which is released regularly during the KnowledgeTree development cycle and contains many of the features of the commercial editions of KnowledgeTree.

For user not wanting to invest in infrastructure, KnowledgeTree is also available as on-demand application built on top of the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud and Simple Storage Service.

KnowledgeTree is a web-based, AJAX application built on the popular open source LAMP (Apache/MySQL/PHP) stack.
