Novell rolls out Red Carpet

Novell, which recently acquired development house Ximian, has released the software management tool Red Carpet Enterprise 2. Red Carpet allows users of a range of Linux distributions to centralise and automate the management of software updates.

Paulo Ferreira, techical manager at Novell South Africa, says customers can deploy Red Carpet Enterprise in as little as 30 minutes, and through its ability to integrate with external repositories, allows users to manage a range of server and desktop applications. Distributions supported in Red Carpet Enterprise 2 include SuSE, Red Hat and Ximan.

Enhancements to Red Carpet Enterprise 2 include the ability to group packages into sets to represent products, product components; inventory support for managed servers and workstations collects network information, including hardware, software and system specifications; and to improve transfers over slower network connections Red Carpet also uses caching servers to more improve transfers accross lower network connections.
