Second Android phone is Magic, Huawei to follow

By   |  February 17, 2009

HTC’s Magic will become the second Android-based mobile phone in the market. Meanwhile Huawei says that it is planning to release two to three mobile phones based on Android, although exactly the company will partner with is still unknown. HTC’s Magic was unveiled today at the Mobile World Congress, currently on in Barcelona, Spain. BBC News reports that the phone will include a 3.2 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi and a GPS. But, unlike its predecessor the G1, the Magic does not have a slide-out keyboard.

The Magic will feature new Android firmware, known as “Cupcake”, with changes based on G1 user suggestions.

The G1 phone was launched by HTC in September last year.

Meanwhile, China’s Huawei Technologies said that it plans to start selling 2-3 phone models using Google’s Android software platform this year.

Edward Chen, head of Huawei’s devices unit, told Reuters that the firm was also considering introducing phones using software from Symbian, the leading software platform, and from Linux foundation LiMo.
