Redlinx launches Linux server for small businesses

By   |  October 24, 2005

Local open source service provider Redlinx has launched a rack-mountable server based on Novell\’s Suse Linux Enterprise Edition, targetted at the small and medium enterprise (SME) space.

\”Many SMEs have no IT infrastructure at all beyond a few PCs and possibly an Internet connection,\” says Redlinx director Garth Francis. \”Most of them stand to make big productivity gains just by implementing simple sharing and collaboration tools. It\’s amazing how many businesses still print out emails received on one machine and distribute them around the office.\”

Redlinx\’s basic SME server is built around the Novell Linux Small Business Solution and includes file and printer sharing and email and collaboration tools such as Groupwise. Additional options include backup solutions and firewalls.

Francis says many small businesses mistakenly believe that servers are expensive to install and maintain. \”It\’s quite possible to provide solutions including hardware, software, implementation and project management at prices that will suit SME budgets,\” he says.

\”Businesses can still use their existing operating systems and software — there is no need to change — but a Linux desktop does come with the system and that can be implemented at any time,\” says Francis.

Redlinx has also partnered with Hansaworld and Gowireless to offer the Hansaworld Express ERP (enterprise resource planning) and CRM (customer relationship management) systems, and the Blackberry Enterprise Server for mobile emailing.

\”We also know that most SMMEs don\’t have in-house IT skills,\” says Francis, \”so we\’ve made everything as easy as possible.\”

The Redlinx SME server package is compatible with Windows networking as well as Apple and Linux networks. The solutions stack runs on a 19-inch rack mountable server with Intel P4/Xeon or AMD Opteron with options between 2Ghz and 3Ghz, and up to 16GB memory.

The server includes Novell\’s small business solution which has a file server for file access and sharing, firewall protection and VPN remote access, and a print server. Also included is Novell Linux desktop 9.0, Novell eDirectory V8.7.3, Novell Groupwise V6.5 and Novell iManager.
