MeeGo, the Linux-based mobile phone operating system (OS) from Nokia and Intel, has been released for Nokia’s N900 phones as well as some Atom-based devices.

KDE ships 4.2.2 update: The KDE community today released Cano, otherwise known as KDE 4.2.2. Cano is another monthly update from the KDE team and is a maintenance and bugfix release. Among the changes in this release are stability improvements in KRunner, improvements in KMail performance and bug fixes in KHTML.

Intel hands over Moblin: In a bid to grow community participation in the development of its Linux-based mobile platform, Intel has invited the Linux Foundation to take over the hosting and co-ordination of Moblin. The mobile platform was launched in 2007 to fill a gap in the OS market for mobile internet devices and has evolved over time to include embedded devices, in-car systems and netbooks.

Time to kill off FAT, says Zemlin: The Linux Foundation’s Jim Zemlin says that it’s time developers went on a diet and removed FAT from their projects. Responding to the recent patent settlement between Microsoft and TomTom, Zemlin say that Microsoft “does not appear to be a leopard capable of changing its spots,” and that it’s time that open source projects removed the FAT filesystem from their projects.

The Mandriva Linux team, close on the heels of its release candidate for its 2009 Spring, has released a beta version of MES 5, the Mandriva Enterprise Server 5. Among other features, MES 5 includes a new installation wizard, Mandriva Directory Server integration and virtualisationwith Xen and KVM.
